Man caught headed into Mexico with assault rifles, ammo

A 20-year-old man is behind bars after he was allegedly caught headed into Mexico with a handgun, assault rifles and ammunition.

U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents filed federal weapons charges against Jonathan Castro-Hernandez on Saturday.

Federal court records show that Castro-Hernandez was headed into Mexico at the Los Indios International Bridge when he was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers.

Authorities allegedly discovered a 9mm handgun, an AK-47, two AR-15 assault rifles and a large cache of ammunition.

Castro-Hernandez appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Monday morning.

Court records show that Castro-Hernandez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Judge Morgan denied bond for Castro-Hernandez until a Thursday afternoon hearing.
