Authorities are investigating a Matamoros resident that attempted to cross the Gateway International Bridge with heroin hidden in canned food.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested a man riding a bicycle with a backpack filled with groceries and heroin.
CBP officers caught Hector Enrique Rubio-Noyola attempting to smuggle five and a half pounds of heroin across the Gateway International Bridge on Wednesday.
According to CBP officers, 39-year-old Rubio-Noyola TMs backpack had three canned food items each filled with a package of alleged heroin.
The packages had a combined weight of five and a half pounds of heroin with a value of $350,000, according to CBP officers.
CBP seized the heroin and turned Rubio-Noyola over to the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.
Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan denied bond for the 39-year-old U.S. Citizen.
Rubio-Noyola remains under U.S. Marshal Custody and a hearing is set for Tuesday, October 1st at 2 p.m.
