Man defends store against sweet tooth robber

A candy store owner is re-thinking his decision to chase after a suspect who held up his candy store.

On Wednesday, a man walked into the Dulceria El Rio Bravo store in Weslaco, pulled out a kitchen knife and demanded money from the cashier.

The woman called for her boyfriend, the business owner, and pressed an emergency button.

Owner Jose Torres struggled to pull out a gun, but the suspect attempted to take the gun away.

We struggled over the gun and it went off, Torres said.

One bullet was shot but no one was injured.

The cashier handed over all the cash in the register and the suspect ran out the door and Torres chased after him.

Now that I think about it, I should have just stayed inside, maybe locked the doors, Torres said.

Torres followed the man to the alley where he was no where to be found.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, 5 ft. 5 in. with a beard.

He wore a navy blue sweater, blue jeans and a brown ball cap at the time of the incident.

Anyone with information on this robbery can contact Weslaco Crime Stoppers at 968-8477.
