A man was trying to cross the Hidalgo/Reynosa International Bridge when authorities discovered he was trying to smuggle 25 bundles of cash.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers stopped a 1994 Ford Crown Victoria on Thursday around 12:05 a.m.
Officers identified the driver as U.S. citizen Esteban Lara and sent his car to a secondary inspection.
During the inspection, a gamma-ray imaging system noticed an abnormality near the dashboard.
Officers removed the windshield and inside a man made compartment, they found the bundles of money wrapped in plastic wrap.
A total of $130,940 was removed from the car and Lara was taken into custody.
Lara told officers that he got the car in Houston from an unknown man. He was told that there was $5,000 in each bundle.
Lara was expecting a $1,000 payment for taking the car and money into Mexico.
