Man in custody after threatening to commit suicide

Authorities said a man will undergo psychiatric evaluation after he threatened to hang himself from a tree.

Edinburg police were called to a home on the 2700 block of west Mile 17 1/2 around 10 a.m.

The man climbed to the top of a tree, wrapping a chain around his neck and the tree.

He reportedly threatened to jump and kill himself.

Police said the man had a knife and also threatened to stab anyone who would come near him.

Negotiators at the scene convinced the man to come down from the tree.

He is now in custody and will undergo psychiatric evaluation.
