A Brownsville man is behind bars after he allegedly tried to run two police officers off the road during a Monday afternoon chase.

Brownsville police arrested 40-year-old Celedonio Cardenas on multiple criminal charges early Monday afternoon.

Investigators said it all started when Cardenas ran a red light off Roosevelt Street and McDavitt Boulevard in front of two patrol cars.

Cardenas allegedly almost hit one of the patrol cars with his SUV.

Officer tried pulling him over but Cardenas tried running them off the road on a 40 mph chase that went under Expressway 77/83 and ended off East Monroe Street.

Cardenas claimed his girlfriend had a medical emergency but police said that could not be confirmed at the scene.

Police charged Cardenas with reckless driving, evading arrest, two counts of assault of a public servant and two counts of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle.

Cardenas is expected to face a Brownsville municipal judge on Wednesday morning.
