Harlingen Police have apprehended a suspect that fled on foot during a routine traffic stop early Thursday morning.
Calls started pouring in to our newsroom at about 3:00 a.m. from viewers concerned about a chopper hovering over the Arroyo Colorado.
Harlingen police told us a man driving a mustang was pulled over for a routine traffic stop on Sam Houston. The officer apparently spotted the man not wearing a seat belt. Police said that when the officer approached the vehicle he noticed the man had also been drinking.
Within further inspection authorities said the officer found cocaine in his vehicle along with other narcotics. He was handcuffed and placed in the police unit but was somehow able to escape, fleeing on foot.
This ensued a chase that sparked a massive man hunt, requiring assistance from Border Patrol agents, their helicopter and Harlingen Firefighters.
Witnesses at the scene told us the man jumped into the arroyo, swimming with handcuffs.
He was found two hours later hiding in the brush and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
He was released shortly after and will be charged and arraigned with evading arrest as well as escaping from custody.
Police said more charges could soon follow.
