Man leading a chase crashes and jumps from expressway

Traffic reduced to a crawl in the area

Authorities are working to clear wreckage from a chase that brought traffic to a standstill at the Highway 281 interchange.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sgt. Johnny Hernandez told Action 4 that it all started in Brooks County.

Brooks County Sheriff's Office deputies were involved in a chase where man driving a 2011 BMW led authorities south into the Rio Grande Valley.

The man somehow lost control, slammed into a Ford F150 and then hit the rail on the Highway 281 interchange in Pharr.

Hernandez said the drive then jumped from the interchange but somehow managed to survive and is being treated at the hospital.

Authorities have identified the man as 21-year-old Josue Benavides of Pharr.

Pharr police are investigating the crash but no word yet on why the man fled from authorities in Brooks County.

Traffic was reduced to a crawl while authorities clear the wreckage and reconstruct the events of the chase and accident.
