Man ordered to prison after pointing laser at federal helicopter

A Donna man has been ordered to federal prison after he aimed a laser at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection helicopter.

Margarito Tristan III pleaded guilty to the crime on July 1, 2013.

The incident happened back in March, when U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine officers were conducting a night training operation in a helicopter.

While conducting the training flight near Weslaco, the pilots were illuminated by a green laser, according to authorities.

The green laser caused the pilots to become disoriented.

The aircrew, along with local authorities, were able to locate the man pointing the laser, and the laser was found inside the vehicle.

Concerned was raised in court for the lives of the pilots and the lives on the ground.

Tristan was ordered to prison for 18 months by U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez.
