Man runs across busy highway to flee Harlingen police

Drivers in Harlingen got a surprise during rush hour traffic on Friday evening.

A man ran across Expressway 83 to escape from police.

It all happened on the expressway between Stuart Place and Altas Palmas Roads shortly before 6 p.m. Friday.

Investigators say the man in a Chevrolet SUV was pulled over for a traffic stop on the westbound lanes of the expressway but ran across the highway.

Witnesses on the eastbound lanes told Action 4 News that the man jumped over the concrete barrier and that they had to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting the man.

Police tackled and caught the suspect after he made it to the frontage road of the eastbound lanes of the expressway.

Investigators said the man had drugs but it's not clear how much he had.

The suspect's identity is not being released at this time but he is expected to be arraigned on Saturday morning.

Public records show the 2004 Chevrolet SUV was last registered to Johnny and Renida Hernandez of Sandia, Texas.

The small town is located on the south side of Lake Corpus Christi.
