A man who jumped from the highest point of the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway has died in the hospital.
Investigators confirmed that 47-year-old Eleazar Mendoza died overnight.
Cameron County Pct. 1 Constable Pete Delgadillo told Action 4 News that Mendoza jumped off the bridge early Wednesday afternoon.
Mendoza drove a black Chevrolet Blazer to middle of the causeway, parked it, got out of the SUV and jumped into the water.
The 2.37-mile bridge rises some 85 feet above the water at its highest point.
The 47-year-old Brownsville man survived the fall and was rushed to the Valley Regional Medical Center where he died overnight.
A motive is not clear but Constable Delgadillo said investigators found alcoholic beverages inside the SUV and believe Mendoza could have been drinking at the time.
Mendoza did not appear to have a criminal record.
An autopsy has been ordered to learn more about the Mendoza's death.
