Authorities have identified a man who jumped from the highest point of an highway overpass during rush hour traffic in McAllen.
McAllen Police Lt. Joel Morales told Action 4 News investigators identified the man as 26-year-old Joe Alex Saucedo.
Investigators say the 26-year-old jumped from South 2nd Street overpass above the westbound lanes of U.S. Expressway 83 around 7 p.m. Monday.
Police believe a car hit Saucedo and then fled the scene.
It's not clear if that driver will face criminal charges but Lt. Morales said police have ongoing investigation.
Public records show that Saucedo lived off El Rancho Avenue in the Balboa Acres neighborhood of McAllen.
Court records show that Saucedo had a troubled past that included arrests in Alamo, McAllen and Mission for marijuana, DWI, theft, abuse of inhalants and other crimes going back to 2010.
His most recent arrest was reported in January in McAllen for criminal trespass with a criminal weapon where he got sentenced to 15 days in jail.
It's not clear what Saucedo was doing on the highway overpass or why he jumped.
