Man who threatened to kill Sheriff Lupe Trevino arraigned

Smith Delgado // Hidalgo County Jail

The man who threatened to kill Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino was arraigned today.

Smith Delgado appeared before Justice of the Peace Rosa Trevino around 10:30 a.m.

He was arrested on Friday, August 23, for threatening to kill Sheriff Trevino.

The 39-year-old used the 911 system with a disabled cell phone to make the threat, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff TMs Office.

Delgado was also arrested on a charge of injury to a child, elderly or disabled and a charge of intent to commit bodily injury.

Sheriff Trevino said, As a public official, I expect resistance to my enforcement policies and lies and rumors to be spread about me. I accept this as part of my job description. But when an individual blatantly threatens law enforcement, then he has shown no regard for the safety and well-being of the entire community and we take this very serious.

His bond was set at $10,000 today.
