Marines making the season brighter for children in need

Marines are bringing some holiday cheer to thousands of local children in need.

It's the season of giving and that is exactly what these Marines intend to do. Since October, they've collected 17,000 toys for local children in need. They say in these tough times, it's nice to be able to reach out and help those less fortunate.

"The smiles on those kids faces, knowing that a lot of them come from real needy families and they're able to enjoy their Christmas that much more-makes a big difference," said Marine Sergeant Israel Maldonado.

Sergeant Joey Garcia couldn't agree more. In fact, he was one of those kids.

"Growing up in Brownsville, I didn't have much. So I was one of the beneficiaries to toys for tots so I know the sediments and what it feels like to receive that toy and how much it can impact your life," described Sgt. Garcia.

Janie Rivas's was left without words. Toys for tots gave her 7 year old son a bike for Christmas.

" just can't explain it," said Rivas.

She told us she couldn't afford one herself and he's been asking for one for the last couple years. These Marines say it's exactly why year after year they continue to take part in this toy drive.

"All these donations help us out every year and kids like these get to have a Christmas like you and me." said Corporal Henry Hernandez..

Sunday is the last day for qualified families to pick up their toys at the "Amigo Land" Event Center in Brownsville at 1 PM
