A Matamoros city official is dead after being shot by men with whom he had gotten into an argument with at a local nightclub.
The Tamaulipas Attorney General's Office (PGJE) has confirmed that Matamoros City Sports Director Wilfrido Campos-Gonzalez was gunned down in downtown early Saturday morning.
Authorities did not specify which nightclub but PGJE officials It all happened a couple of blocks away from City Hall shortly after midnight Saturday.
Witnesses told investigators that Campos-Gonzalez had gotten into an altercation with men at club and that they shot him outside.
Paramedics found his body without signs of life.
A Good Samaritan and paramedics were trying to revive Campos-Gonzalez when gunmen arrived and allegedly made them dump his body outside a building on the highway to Reynosa.
PGJE officials have promised a thorough investigation but no suspects have been identified or arrested.
Campos-Gonzalez was shown on Action 4 News during a July 30th report about an Australian man running from the North Pole to the South but who made a pit stop in Matamoros.
The Matamoros native had a career in Mexican politics but most recently took the post as city sports director where he organized races and other events.
