Matamoros reporter killed covering gun battle

A Matamoros reporter lost his life after being caught in the crossfire of a gunbattle.

Sources tell Action 4 News that El Expresso reporter Carlos Alberto Guajardo-Romero was killed in the incident.

Full details were not immediately available but Matamoros residents reported a shootout on Friday morning.

The sources told Action 4 News that Guajardo-Romero was inside a truck at the time of the incident.

Guajardo worked as the chief for the public safety section of the newspaper.

Action 4 News is told Guajardo-Romero was well-known and had worked in several media outlets in Matamoros thoughout his career.

The Brownsville Herald reported that Guajardo-Romero was driving a Ford truck down Avenida Pedro Cardenas in Fraccionamiento Victoria.

The neighborhood is located across from the Plaza Fiesta Shopping Center.

A source told the Brownsville Herald that Guajardo-Romero was on his day off when he was called to gather information about the ongoing shootout between the Mexican military and armed gunmen.
