Mercedes ISD elementary student arrested off campus after found in possession of a knife

Mercedes Independent School District Superintendent Dan Treviño has confirmed that police arrested an elementary school student on Wednesday after he was found in possession of a knife off campus.

Mercedes Independent School District Superintendent Dan Treviño has confirmed that police arrested an elementary school student on Wednesday after he was found in possession of a knife off campus.

Treviño says police arrested the student at the city's Boys & Girl's Club. An investigation indicated that the student had the knife in his backpack while on the school bus, Treviño said.

"The district will continue to look into this matter and will be disciplining the student for their actions,” Treviño told CBS 4 News. “We always strive to keep our students and staff safe while they are on school premises.”

The student, whose name is being withheld because he is a minor, will most likely be sent to the district's disciplinary campus, Treviño said.

Surveillance suggests no student was harmed or threatened during the incident.
