MMA cadet killed in Colorado hit-and-run accident

A Marine Military Academy cadet has died following a hit-and-run accident in a Denver suburb.

Colorado State Police reported that 15-year-old Gerad "Gerry" Julien was killed in Lakewood just before 10 p.m. Saturday.

According to KMGH-TV in Denver, the teen was jogging when he was hit by a car that may have been drag racing.

The Denver-based television station reported that Julien died at St. Anthony's Central Hospital early Sunday morning.

The boy's father told KMGH-TV that the teen wanted to be a Navy SEAL and was attending the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen where he was "becoming a man."

According to KMGH-TV, witnesses reported seeing two cars racing in the area at the time of the crash.

The Denver TV station reported that the vehicle that hit Julien may have run a red light.

The Marine Military Academy issued the following statement:

"We were honored to have Gerard Julien at Marine Military Academy. While at the academy, he was dedicated to his family, his faith and his community. He was a bright young man who showed a daily commitment to excellence in academics, athletics and student leadership. Cadet Julien will forever be part of the Marine Military Academy family. We are truly sorry for his loss and our deepest condolences go the family and friends of Gerry.
