A Cameron Park mother is behind bars after being accused of smoking crack and cigarettes in front of her 2-year-old son.
Cameron County Sheriff's Department deputies arrested 27-year-old Melissa Marie Vega late Monday afternoon.
Court records show deputies were called out to a home off Florencia Avenue to investigate possible child abuse.
Family members told deputies Vega lived in a detached room in the back of the house and had been doing drugs.
A cloud of cigarette smoke allegedly rushed out of the 12 x 20 room when Vega opened the door.
Vega allegedly admitted to smoking crack and cigarettes while her 2-year-old son was in the unventilated room with her.
Deputies reported that Vega had bloodshot eyes and appeared to be under the influene of drugs while her son had a dirty diaper.
Investigators reported the incident to Child Protective Services and charged Vega with child endangerment.
Deputies seized a crack pipe as evidence and turned the boy over to the custody of family members.
Vega appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Court Judge Alfredo Padilla on Wednesday morning where she was issued a $10,000 bond.
The 27-year-old mother remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail.
