Neighbors worried about crime after Alton gas station shooting

Alton police are out searching for several suspects in connection to a deadly shooting.

Neighbors say they TMve noticed an increase of crime in the area.

The deadly shooting has most residents worried.

They feel even though they live less than a mile from the police station their neighborhood is no longer safe.

Maria Elizondo said Alton was once a quite community-- but as the city has grown many newcomers have brought trouble.

"Different people around here that I have never seen before that look very dangerous, Elizondo said.

She didnt hear the gunshot that killed 31-year-old Jos Luis Gonzalez.

But when she learned that the shooting happened across the street she wasn't surprised.

"I TMm scared at night. I TMm scared all the time. I lock my doors all the time because there is a lot of crime to this side, she said.

Alton Police said Gonzalez was shot once in the chest at the Aziz quick stop while inside his truck.

He managed to drive a short distance away before succumbing to his injuries.

"I was terrified. I said that is too close to my home. I thought maybe I should move..., Elizondo said. Elizonda is worried that the shooting could be connected to organized crime.

Police are releasing few details about the investigation, and at this time no arrests have been made.
