New state law requires schools to notify parents about lice
Under a new state law, school nurses must notify parents when children contract head lice.
Senate Bill 1566 — signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June — took effect on Sept. 1.
The law requires school nurses to notify parents whenever they find lice.
Parents of the child with lice must be notified within 48 hours and provided with recommendations on how to treat the problem. Parents of that child's classmates must be notified within five school days.
