A New Year's Eve party ended with the host in the hospital and his guest behind bars.

La Feria police arrested 20-year-old Leonardo Flores on an aggravated assault charge around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Police Chief Don Garcia told Action 4 News that it all started with an argument in the backyard of home on the 300 block of Villarreal Street.

Chief Garcia said the argument ended with Flores stabbing the man he was arguing with 31-year-old host Roberto Romo.

Paramedics rushed Romo to the Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen where he remains in stable condition.

A motive in the argument was not clear but Chief Garcia said Romo was the host of a New Year's Eve party that Flores attended.

Flores is expected to be arraigned at the Cameron County Jail late Monday morning.

Jail records show that Flores also has a detainer filed by U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement.

Chief Garcia said Flores is an illegal immigrant who lived in Santa Rosa.
