Strong northern winds have prompted authorities to temporarily shut down two popular beaches on South Padre Island.
The winds arrived with a cold front late Thursday night.
But on Friday morning, the winds were causing strong rip currents and extremely high tides on the northern end of the Island.
Cameron County officials decided to shut down both Beach Access 5 and Beach Access 6 until the tides die down.
County Judge Carlos Cascos said authorities are asking the public avoid entering the two beaches.
In addition, I have asked our law enforcement authorities to ensure that no individuals or vehicles be allowed entry to these two beaches," Cascos said. "It is very important that the public pay attention to our warnings and stay out of harm TMs way.
