Not wearing seat belt ends with multiple criminal charges

Eric Daniel Mares // San Benito Police Department

Not wearing a seat belt ended with multiple criminal charges for a man in San Benito.

San Benito police arrested Eric Daniel Mares early Thursday morning.

The incident happened on the 300 block of W. Robertson Street near the City Park around 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Officers stopped Mares for not wearing a seat belt but noticed an open container of alcohol in his blue GMC pickup TMs center console.

Police told Action 4 News that cocaine was also found in a clear plastic bag on the left front board of the vehicle.

Mares allegedly tried to lie about his identity but police learned he had another warrant for his arrest with the Cameron County Sheriff TMs Office.

Information about the outstanding warrant was not immediately available.

The 28-year-old man was charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug free zone and failure to identify.

A bond of $3,500 was set for Mares.
