A San Benito nun in the running for a $50,000 prize that would benefit a refugee center is just a few votes away from winning.
Sister Zita Telkamp is one of 41 nominees for the 2013 Lumen Christi Award which is an award for missionary work in the church.
She has been working at La Posada Refugee Center in San Benito since 2008 and is nominated for the award by Bishop Daniel Flores.
Sister Telkamp told Action 4 News if she wins, $25,000 would go to the refugee center and $25,000 to the Brownsville Diocese.
She said the funds that would go to La Posada would help get new septic tanks for the refugee center TMs dorms.
I humbly accepted the nomination mainly because it will mean a lot for La Posada, Telkamp said.
Voting ends at 5 pm on Friday, May 10th.
