Office Depot cellophane purchase leads to drug bust

A suspicious purchase of cellophane at an Office Depot in McAllen led authorities to a double drug bust in Pharr and a Mission tire shop, court records released Wednesday revealed.

Action 4 News first reported the arrest of five men and seizure of more than 1,285 pounds of marijuana on Friday.

Court records released Wednesday revealed that authorities first learned about the illegal activity after observing a suspicious cellophane purchase at an Office Depot in McAllen.

Two of the men were allegedly seen leaving the store with four rolls of cellophane.

Authorities wrote in a criminal complaint that the type of cellophane purchased at the store is commonly used to wrap marijuana and cocaine.

Investigators followed the men leading them to a home in Pharr were authorities found more than 241 pounds of marijuana.

Authorities followed one of the men to a tire shop in Mission where authorities found more than 1,000 pounds of marijuana inside.

Jose Angel Martinez, Ausencio Valdez-Villarreal, Luisano Guadalupe Jasso, Hector Ivan Guzman and Humberto Torres-Silva remain in custody under federal drug charges.
