Palmview police chief placed on paid administrative leave amid investigation

The Palmview police chief's job is on the line as the city launches an investigation.

The Palmview police chief's job is on the line as the city launches an investigation.

The city placed Chief Christopher Barrera on paid administrative leave Monday.

"He was notified verbally that he was going to be placed on administrative leave and a day later he got the written notice," said Barrera’s attorney, Javier Peña.

The decision from the city comes after Interim City Manager Leo Olivares wrote a memo, addressing problems within the police department.

"Right now, I can’t comment on an ongoing personnel matter, however, I do look forward to commenting once this is resolved and informing the public in terms of what has occurred," Olivares said.

Peña adds that the issues came up after the chief complained how the city handled certain information.

"The city manager writes up this memo of possible problems that he’s blaming on the police, however, everything on that list—pretty much everything on that list— does not fall under the chief of police or police department," added Peña.
