Police arrest Donna man accused of sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman
Officers arrested a Donna man Saturday after he sexually assaulted an 80-year-old woman, according to the criminal complaint against him.
At 4:20 p.m. Saturday, the Donna Police Department dispatched officers to the 600 block of South 10th Street.
Officers met with a 60-year-old man who said he caught Jacobo Zelaya, 43, of Donna sexually assaulting his mother, according to the criminal complaint.
The 60-year-old man said "he entered his residence and hear his mother (victim) yelling out of her bedroom," according to the criminal complaint. The man said "he rushed to his mother's room and observed the defendant without shorts in boxer like underwear laying on top of his mother."
Zelaya ran away after the 60-year-old man "defended his mother and beat up the defendant," according to the criminal complaint.
Hidalgo County EMS took the elderly woman to Valley Baptist Medical Center for treatment.
Officers arrested Zelaya the same day.
"During the interrogation, the defendant admitted to the offense of sexual assault," according to the criminal complaint. "Defendant corroborated the witnesses's statement and admitted to sexually assaulting the victim."
Zelaya is charged with burglary of habitation with intent to commit a sex offense, a first-degree felony.
A judge set bond at $70,000.
Court records don't list an attorney for Zelaya, who remains in custody and couldn't be reached for comment.
