Edcouch police continue their investigation into a deadly shooting early Thursday morning.
The alleged gunman, Aaron Guerra, was arrested and charged yesterday with murder.
Action 4 News learned that victim, Alonzo Perez, was recently released from prison, but that doesn't change the manner in which police are working the investigation.
"What you have to keep in mind is the deceased is still a victim here," Edcouch Police Chief Eloy Cardenas said.
Chief Cardenas said he is working to get the family of Perez financial assistance through the county.
"Something like this of course is an unfortunate event and our condolences go out to the family," Chief Cardenas said.
Police told Action 4, Perez was unarmed when he followed Guerra home.
After a fight broke out, Guerra allegedly shot Perez multiple times including one time in the head.
"What you have to look at is the facts of the case, the nature of the crime and how it was committed and to what extent," Chief Cardenas said.
It's not only the department TMs first murder of 2014; it's also the department TMs first murder in about 20 years.
"We are physically fit and trained of course to handle these types of cases," Chief Cardenas.
He said once the investigation is complete it will be handed over to the counties district attorney.
