Primera chief resigns amid new porn investigation at work

Fresh into his one week unpaid suspension for texting a county constable porn pictures of a transgendered female, Primera's Police Chief Joe Rodriguez calls it quits. In his resignation letter to the mayor, he thanks Pat Patterson for the opportunity to work in such a "wonderful environment." He also calls the Primera Police Department a "brotherhood" and says it "hurts" to leave a place that "feels like home." The chief's resignation won't become official until it's approved by the city's board of aldermen That special called meeting will likely take place Tuesday evening at 6:30, according to City Administrator Javier Mendez. The chief has been on suspension since Tuesday's closed door meeting. The mayor talked then about trust and trying to move forward from the porn scandal to rock the small community. "Things do happen and he knows now not to let that happen again," Mayor Patterson said on Tuesday. What city leaders apparently didn't know then is that the chief's police department computer allegedly contained inappropriate material, according to multiple sources who spoke to Action 4 News under the condition of anonymity. Mendez says the computer in question has been seized to be checked by a third party for evidence. "I will be looking into an outside agency because we don't have the technical expertise," the city administrator said. The new investigation only casts further public doubt into the chief's trust and even the competency of their city leaders. Bea Canales cites the chief's past porn problems when he was fired from Rio Hondo ISD in 2007 as reason enough for commissioner to have checked Rodriguez's work computer before deciding on a punishment. "If he resigned obviously he's guilty of something," Canales said. Another Primera resident said she was thankful the chief would be gone. "He's supposed to be an example to all of us... And he must have been... Well... No comment," Ruby Cavazos said. And while Chief Rodriguez tries to step down, his time in Primera will undoubtedly be marred by repeated scandals.
