Program offers free legal aid for Rio Grande Valley vets

Calling all Vets! You can get free legal aid this month through Veterans Day to put your will together.

The Hidalgo County Bar Foundation along with other organizations have teamed up with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to give Vets whose estates don't exceed $300,000 dollars, free help to get their wills and powers of attorney drafted.

If you don TMt have a will and have children or property, the state can determine who gets the property. It TMs important to plan for that and it saves your family a lot of trouble and heart ache and time from going through trying to decide who keeps what," said Brandy Wingate with the Hidalgo County Bar Foundation and Association.

Vets can apply for this free service online at, at the VA clinic at 2101 S. Col. Rowe Blvd in McAllen or the Hidalgo County Veteran Service office at 2816 S. Business Hwy 281 in Edinburg.

Informational clinics leading up to the drafting of the documents on November 11 will be every Friday.

The first informational clinic is October 7 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the McAllen VA clinic.
