PSJA ISD student thrives at alternative school
Fourteen-year-old Greg Solano currently attends Buell Central DAEP, an alternative school within the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District.
The alternative school consists of students who have been removed from their original campus for behavior issues and other serious offenses.
Solano says since being in the program, he’s become accustomed to the learning environment at Buell Central and feels a sense of belonging compared to his previous school.
“In my normal school, since I would misbehave--they wouldn't give me the work anymore,” Solano said. “They would just have me sitting there. They wouldn’t give me the work. They would see me as a troubled kid, so every time they would see me, security would be walking behind me."
Teachers and staff say they’ve seen a change in Solano’s work ethic, even describing him as the “ideal student.”
Solano will attend Southwest High School in January as a freshman and wants to pursue a career in engineering.
