PSJA school district to open new early college high school
The PSJA Independent School District is offering more options for middle school students as another early college high school is underway.
More institutions happen to be a need as the school district continues to grow with more students and parents interested in obtaining college hours at no cost.
"A lot of our students that we get in the high schools come from other districts, specifically because we have the free college for everyone,” said Alamo Middle School Counselor, Erika Carpio. “So, all of those resources all together that might not be available in other districts have led to more of a need in PSJA."
While the PSJA Collegiate High School campus is still under construction, it will be the first of its kind. PSJA will be the first school district to have a college and university center, which will be located right next to the new collegiate high school.
“Instead of the students having to travel to STC or UTRGV, the college classes and university classes will be coming to the college and university center," said Mari Saenz, Principal of PSJA Collegiate High School.
The convenience of not having to worry about transportation is what students like 8th grader, Sean Renteria, find most appealing.
"I just have to walk across the campus," said Renteria. "I mean, who wouldn't want to take that opportunity?”
For those interested in applying, PSJA will be having a parent, student meeting on Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. at PSJA Early College High School’s auditorium.
The collegiate high school is looking for 125 students, as it will be opening its doors this fall.
