Authorities are investigating the death of a teenage boy who died shortly after collapsing while running laps at school.
PSJA Independent School District officials confirmed that the incident happened at Buell Central DAEP in Pharr around 9:45 a.m. Monday.
School district officials said the 14-year-old boy collapsed while running laps at the alternative education campus.
Staff members gave the boy first aid and paramedics rushed him to the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen where the boy died.
PSJA ISD officials said the boy's parents were notified and that they met the school's principal at the hospital.
The boy's name is not being released at this time while the exact cause of his death remains under investigation.
School district officials are providing counselors to students at staff.

A male student at Buell Central DAEP in Pharr passed away today (Monday, February 17, 2014). The 14-year-old student collapsed while running laps at school at approximately 9:45 am. First aid was rendered at the campus and he was transferred by ambulance to Rio Grande Regional Hospital. The student TMs parents were contacted and the Campus Principal met the parents at the hospital. His parents and campus staff were informed that the young man had passed away. PSJA ISD TMs crisis counseling plan has been implemented starting today to provide counseling support for both students and staff. Counselors will be available over the next few days. Counselors and staff have been in contact with the family and will be available to provide any support needed. At this time, the cause of death is unknown.
