Public intoxication suspect bites Harlingen police officer

A Brownsville man is facing criminal charges after biting a Harlingen police officer who was arresting him for public intoxication.

Harlingen police arrested 28-year-old Gerardo Gutierrez, Jr. on multiple criminal charges on Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators told Action 4 News that officers were called to a neighborhood across from the Valley Baptist Medical Center around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Neighbors off Jones and Hamilton Streets told police Gutierrez was wandering around the streets and appeared intoxicated.

Gutierrez allegedly jumped a fence and then had to lay down on the ground.

The Brownsville man allegedly fought with officers, spit on them and bit one police officer on the hand.

Officers managed to subdue Gutierrez and arrest him for public intoxication, resisting arrest and aggravated assault of a public servant.

Gutierrez appeared before a Harlingen municipal judge on Wednesday morning where he issued $31,000 dollars in bonds and a $237 fine for public intoxication.
