Rains leave thousands of Valley residents without power

Crews are working to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses following power failures caused by Wednesday morning's rain.

AEP Texas officials confirm that more than 2,200 homes and businesses were left without power in Cameron County.

Another 631 customers were left without power in Willacy County and 621 left without power in Hidalgo County.

The cause of the power failures is reported to be utility pole top fires.

It's all due to the extreme drought in south Texas and strong winds, which accumulate dust in the utility pole equipment.

When it rains this dust turns into a cakey substance that disrupts the pole causing sparks and outages.

AEP Texas crews are working to restore power to the affected areas.
