A shooting outside a doctor's office in Raymondville has left one man injured and neighbor's fearing for their safety.
"There is a school right across the street and that is scary with gunshots going off because our kids attend school right here across the street," one woman said. "There's usually elderly people right here in this office and it is scary, said a neighbor who heard the gunshot.
Police officers were dispatched to the Neighborhood Doctor clinic off South 10th Street around 10 a.m. Monday.
Investigators told Action 4 News that two Hispanic men attempted to kidnap a doctor's assistant and steal the black Suburban he was traveling in.
Authorities put nearby Pittman Elementary School under a temporary lockdown due to the shooting.
Minutes prior to the shooting, a person who lives near the office, reported suspicious activity in the area to authorities.
Raymondville Police Det. Andres Maldonado spoke to Action 4 News about the case.
I had just called to report a suspicious vehicle that is never in this neighborhood," Maldonado said. "There were two guys inside and every time someone would drive by they would hide their face. I called at 9:44 and at 9:52 the shot happened.
Raymondville investigators said the doctor's assistant was shot once in the leg during a brief struggle with the suspects.
"He fled inside the doctor's office after the struggle," Maldonado said. "The two suspects left in a black Isuzu Rodeo, unknown license plates at this time. Both subjects were Hispanic males. One had a large mustache and the other one was wearing an orange Texas longhorn baseball cap"
The Neighborhood Doctor has been a target in the past.
A month ago someone apparently tried to set the building on fire.
There haven't been any further leads on that," Maldonado said. "There wasn't severe damage or any other items left at the scene. But we are still trying to figure out if both incidents are related."
A nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown for a few hours while authorities searched for the suspects, which have not yet turned up.
Authorities are looking at whether the shooting and kidnapping was intended for the doctor of the clinic since the Suburban belongs to him.
Police need any leads in finding the shooters and are asking the public to call them with helpful information.
