Records: Woman attempted to cross Hidalgo bridge with cocaine strapped to her thigh
Officers arrested a 23-year-old woman Monday after she attempted to cross the Hidalgo bridge with a bundle of cocaine strapped to her thigh, according to court records.
Lorena Barrera, 23, of McAllen attempted to walk across the bridge from Reynosa to Hidalgo on Monday. Officers sent Barrera to secondary inspection for a pat-down.
They found a kilogram of cocaine strapped to her right thigh, according to the criminal complaint. Barrera said someone offered her $500 to smuggle cocaine across the border.
Barrera is charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos ordered her detained until a hearing on Friday.
An attorney who represents Barrera didn't respond to a request for comment.
