It all started with reports of a gun battle near the Rodeo El Portal in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

According to witnesses, gunmen used assault rifles to shoot at a military helicopter.

It's not clear if there were injuries or casaulties but residents reported a series of blockades and several tire fires throughout the city.

According to the Twitter users, the smoke from the burning tires was being used to block the view of the military helicopters.

One Twitter user reported tire spikes had been deployed in the populous Mil Cumbres neighborhood in the central part of Reynosa.

Another Twitter user reported that an intense gun battle had taken place in the downtown area.

The chaos comes amid the busy Easter holiday when thousands of Mexican tourists use international bridges to cross into the Rio Grande Valley.

None of the incidents reported in Reynosa affected the international bridges.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Wait Times website, all bridges remain open.
