RGV 2010 Census drawing near

The 2010 Census group wants to make sure Rio Grande Valley population numbers are accurate.Officials said Thursday the valley is greatly undercounted when it comes to correct figures, which poses a problem. They said money based on population will not be awarded and road projects and hospitals usually lose out on the funding.Officials said the valley is so undercounted because most of the Hispanic population is fearful of reporting to the federal government. For that reason, the census questionnaires are now easier and simplified. They are short form only now and they only contain 10 questions.Questions about immigration status or social security numbers are not included. The Census also offers a bilingual questionnaire in Spanish and English.Officials said the questionnaires are safe and confidential.
