Ricardo Rodriguez has unseated longtime Hidalgo County District Attorney Rene Guerra.
Rodriguez took 63.9 percent of the votes, beating the longtime incumbent in the Hidalgo County Democratic Party primary election.
Without a Republic opponent, Rodriguez will essentially win the Hidalgo County District Attorney in the November 4th, 2014 election.
Guerra has served as district attorney for 32 years but Rodriguez got 29,172 votes compared to 16,474 ballots cast for Guerra.
Rodriguez stepped down as judge with the 92nd State District Court to run for district attorney.
The race for the district attorney's race was described as perhaps one of the most hotly-contested in the Rio Grande Valley.
On Saturday, the CBS news program "48 Hours" featured the race during a report about the unsolved 1960 murder of beauty queen Irene Garza.
