Parking lot next to the Rio Grande City Police Department was used for immigrant smuggling

Authorities are keeping their eye on a parking lot next to the Rio Grande City Police Department following a failed immigrant smuggling attempt.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested Jose Del Carmen Sanchez-Arcos on federal human smuggling charges on Monday morning.

Court records show that a witness saw several people getting into a car and told nearby Border Patrol agents.

The agents pulled over the car and found Sanchez-Arcos behind the wheel with six illegal immigrants.

Sanchez-Arcos appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Tuesday morning.

Court records show that Sanchez-Arcos is also an illegal immigrant.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for Sanchez-Arcos until a Friday morning hearing.

Action 4 News spoke to the Rio Grande City Police Department about the issue.

The parking lot is owned by the city but is only blocks away from the Rio Grande River.

Police departmernt officials said Border Patrol agents constantly keep an eye on the parking lot.
