Rio Hondo's fire chief get to keep his job, but new rules in place shift the hiring power to the city commission.
They are just some of the decisions made at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
Chief Weldon Matlock, who also heads up the police department, was up for possible termination.
It stemmed from the recent arrests of two, off-duty volunteer firefighters and one applicant on arson charges.
The chief explained to Action 4's Ryan Wolf what commissioners talked to him about behind closed doors.
"The conversation was just about explaining the situation," he said. "We had a great conversation. We discussed plans to prevent this. It was just a good conversation and hopefully we can move forward with public safety."
While the chief retains his position that he's held for 3 years, some of his power has been stripped away.
Commissioners will now have the final say on whether volunteer firefighter applicants are approved or not.
