Authorities are investigating a fatal accident that involved some 21 illegal immigrants packed into a truck that was reported stolen.
The fatal wreck happened near the intersection of FM 2844 and FM 490 just north of McCook after 10 p.m. Wednesday night.
Starr County officials confirm at least one person is dead and seven people were taken to the hospital after a Ford F-250 rolled over.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers are now handling the investigation of the fatal accident.
Investigators told Action 4 News that the truck was reported stolen in McAllen.
U.S. Border Patrol officials believe at least 21 illegal immigrants were packed in the truck at the time of the accident.
Authorities were able to catch eight immigrants, seven of whom were among the injured.
Investigators said both the driver and other immigrants fled into the brush.
Although a DPS helicopter was dispatched to the area, the search for the driver and immigrants was hampered by cold and rainy weather conditions.
Authorities have not identified the immigrant who died or his nationality but the case remains under investigation.
