A typical game of basketball turned deadly for a 16 year-old Roma teen this after he collapsed and died.
Robert Garza, Jr. died doing what he loved playing basketball.
It happened Saturday afternoon at an A-A-U tournament in Austin, when while playing with the South Texas Hoopsters Garza collapsed.
Sources told Action 4, it was sudden when the teen collapsed after returning to the bench.They added Garza hadn't complained of symptoms leading up to the collapse.
He was immediately rushed to Breckenridge hospital in Austin, where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Garza was a junior at Roma High School and played varsity basketball for the Gladiators.
Roma officials weren't available for comment but former Roma coach and present McAllen boys basketball coach Homer Garr.
I love Robert and my heart is broken|he is one of the best young men I have ever known, said Garr.
He had such a bright future|Robert and his family are truly great people and it's just such a loss to everyone|Roma is a very special place to me|we are all in shock right now. .
