Children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen will now receive safety helmets as they leave the hospital.
The medical staff wants to ensure the kids do not end up back in the emergency room.
The Cameron/Willacy County Medical Society donated the safety helmets as part of the Texas Medical Association's Hats for Little Kids program.
The program aims to decrease traumatic head injuries of children who play in the streets this summer.
"We show them how to properly position them and we also give them information on bike safety," said Dr. Maria Muoz with the Cameron/Willacy County Medical Society.
Pediatric Intensivist.Dr. Rangasamy Anand agreed.
"Across the country and the around the world, helmets on children on a bike, skates or rollerblades, save head injuries up to 80 or even 90 percent," he said.
