San Benito loveable grandson, grandmother were inseparable

Two days after a deadly apartment fire in San Benito, which claimed the lives of a 5-year-old and his 64-year-old grandmother, family members are remembering them.

Angelo Martinez is remembered as a very lovable 5-year-old who looked up to his grandmother Alicia Anguino.

The two were the only ones at the apartment when the fire broke out.

Angie Hamm said the 5-year-old loved his grandmother and he never left her side.

Hamm said her nephew's playful smile often hid his mischievous ways. She lived for her family, for her grandchildren. She was a woman that never had a frown in her face, always smiled and would live her life for her grandchildren and her family. The kind of woman my sister was, Hamm said.

Wednesday morning the 65-year-old San Benito CISD bus driver was at her apartment on East Stenger Street with Angelo when the fire claimed their lives.

Angelo TMs mom and his four siblings went to a friend TMs house right across the street.

Both were found unconscious. Alicia didn't make it.

Meanwhile, Angelo was still breathing, and he was rushed to a Harlingen hospital

He was our angel, relative Donald Hamm said. He was a sweet kid| mischievous but in a good way. I am just going to really, really miss him a lot."

Angelo TMs organs will be donated.

Funeral services for both Angelo and his grandmother are scheduled for next week.
