Selling illegal cigarettes lands Edinburg man behind bars

Julio Cesar Garcia // HCSO

An Edinburg businessman is facing criminal charges after being accused of having at least 500 packs of illegal cigarettes.

Julio Cesar Garcia is facing a cigarette tax violation charge before Judge Aida Salinas Flores with 398th State District Court.

Investigators with the Texas Comptroller TMs Office are not releasing details at this time.

But court records obtained by Action 4 News show that Garcia is accused of possessing 10,000 or more unstamped cigarettes.

At 20 cigarettes per pack, that would make at least 500 packs of cigarettes.

With a state tax of $1.41 per pack, that amounts to at least $700 dollars in unpaid taxes.

Public records show that Garcia is the owner of the RGV Texas Drive-Thru off East University Drive just outside Edinburg.

Garcia is expected to appear back in court on August 18th.
