Senate Democrats say Trump's border wall could cost $70 billion

The border wall proposed by President Donald J. Trump could cost $70 billion, according to an analysis released Tuesday by Democrats on the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

With major details about the proposed wall — what the wall will look like, where the wall will be built and whether or not it'll be an actual wall — still unknown, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security can't produce a comprehensive cost estimate, Secretary John Kelly told the committee on April 5.

"There is no reliable estimate of the cost of construction of the full border wall, but extrapolated estimates place the construction cost of the wall and associated technology and infrastructure at nearly $70 billion," according to the report prepared by Senate Democrats.

The analysis produced by Senate Democrats is much higher than previous estimates.

In October, the MIT Technology Review published an analysis that projected the wall could cost up to $40 billion depending.

In February, the Reuters news service published an internal U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimate of $21.6 billion.

In March, the Bloomberg news service published a report summarizing various estimates that ranged from $8 billion to $40 billion.
