Sheriff Trevio clears the air on social media

Social media platforms have been blowing up since it was announced Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevio was resigning before his term was over.

The announcement was made a little before 11 a.m. and immediately Facebook and Twitter exploded with reactions.

However, the most surprising post came from the sheriff himself around 12:30 p.m.

The sheriff TMs Facebook post was his first public statement since handing in his letter of resignation.

In the post, Sheriff Lupe Trevio wrote:

Greetings to all my Facebook Supporters. Attached is my letter of resignation that serves as notice for my retirement. I do this with a very heavy heart but it is in the best interest of the County of Hidalgo and my family. Please take the letter and its contents for face value. Rumors run abound but they are rumors until they become fact. I would sincerely like to thank you for your support in good and bad times. These are the times when you find out who your true friends are. I have always counted on you and will continue to do so as you will with me. You may contact me through my personal email account, sherifftrevino@aol.com. Thank You and God Bless You. Sheriff Lupe Trevino.

In the post he also included his letter of resignation.

Since we broke the story online, over 1,800 people have shared this story on Facebook and ocer 80 people have shared it on Twitter.

Over 500 comments posted on our KGBT Action 4 News Facebook page both in favor of Sheriff Lupe Trevino's decision and against.

Julez Suarez wrote, I don't remember there being so much corruption in Hidalgo county. I'm not sure what he means that he's leaving it better with a lower crime rate than when he took office it's a bit ironic and hypocritical coming from him that everyone so close under his command were running all the drugs in the Valley.

Letty Howards said, All that going on under his watch and he had no clue? He should've resigned a long time ago!

Judy Anne Perez wrote, "Well if there is people already expressing interest in such position it should be considered family backgrounds. It's not to much of a shock. People saw this coming with so much going on. No one will fully know the details. This decision should be decided by a higher individual other than our county."

Victoria Jaimes wrote on Facebook, " Let TMs be honest. The only reason he resigned is because he knows whats coming, and if the fbi gets him while he's in office he doesn't get his retirement".

While the majority of the comments indicate the public is pleased with his resignation, there are some who are thanking him for his work.

Aidee Galvan said, Its sad how many of the people that are happy he resigned don't know that who ever is replacing Mr. Trevino is really going to be corrupted !!!!!! I think people don't know how much Lupe Trevino has done for this County....Well I hope that the people living in the Hidalgo County don't regret it!!!!

Norma Farias Aguilar isn't in favor of all the negative comments writing, " OMG...YOU ALL BUNCH OF JUDGES. ..ITS SO SAD THAT WE AS A NATION CANT SUPPORT WHATS WE VOTED FOR...TILL WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH...THAT WHY WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF HATE. ..JUST SAYING..

Many are also commenting on why they believe he didn TMt wait until the end of his term and who should be the next sheriff.
